What To Do If You Have a Dental Emergency
Many patients aren't sure what to do when they experience a dental emergency. First, you should call our practice at (269) 344-4004 to schedule an emergency dental appointment. You can also follow these important instructions from our dentist on what to do in the case of different emergencies.
Knocked-out Teeth
If a tooth has been knocked out, do not touch its root; handle it by the crown. Rinse the tooth with clean water, and gently see if you can place it back in the socket. If not, place the tooth in milk. Our dentist may be able to re-insert and save your tooth if dental treatment is performed within one or two hours.
Broken Tooth or Lost Restoration
Rinse any pieces of your tooth or restoration with clean water and place it in a clean cloth. Bring the pieces with you to your appointment at our dentistry practice serving greater Portage and Kalamazoo.
Toothache or Gum Pain
Rinse your mouth with water, and gently brush and floss your teeth to see if the pain subsides. Take over-the-counter pain medication to reduce discomfort, and apply an ice compress to the affected area to reduce dental pain and swelling until you can see the dentist.
An Abscess
An abscess is a serious infection that can cause damage if left untreated. It can result in a pus-filled lesion on the gums, causing significant pain and swelling. Seeing a dentist immediately is critical. In the meantime, you can rinse your mouth with a saltwater solution in preparation for your emergency dental appointment.
Soft-tissue Injuries
You can rinse your mouth with a saltwater solution if you have suffered a soft-tissue injury due to a bite or burn. If there is bleeding, apply pressure with a gauze pad and apply an ice compress to the area.
Wonderful professionals, I was seen promptly in an emergency situation. John Esman, 5-star Google Review
Restorative Treatment Options for
Dental Emergencies
We offer a wide range of dental services for our Portage and Kalamazoo patients. Some of the restorative dentistry services that we may perform include:
Dental Fillings
Our dentist uses tooth-colored fillings to restore teeth that have been damaged by cavities, and to replace old fillings that have become loose or fallen out.
Dental Crowns
A dental crown may be placed over fractured, chipped, or cracked teeth. They may also be used after root canal therapy, and to support teeth with large fillings.
Root Canal Therapy
When infection has reached the dental roots, it can cause a sudden and severe toothache. Our emergency dentist can perform root canal therapy to eliminate pain and infection.
Dental Bridges
If you have lost a tooth to decay or injury, we can place a traditional or implant-supported bridge to fill in the gap and restore your ability to speak, smile, and chew.
Dentures
If you have multiple missing teeth, our dentist can fit you with full or partial dentures. We use high-quality materials to fabricate natural-looking restorations that fit comfortably.
Dental Implants
Restorations that are secured using dental implants offer an unsurpassed level of stability. However, this option requires more time and expense.
Cosmetic Treatment Options
In case of a chipped or cracked tooth, we may recommend the following aesthetic dentistry procedures to our Portage and Kalamazoo patients:
Porcelain Veneers
Porcelain veneers can be placed over a single front tooth or several of the front teeth to conceal cracked or chipped teeth.
Dental Bonding
Dental bonding is a quicker, lower-cost alternative to veneers for patients who want to address chips and cracks affecting the anterior teeth.
