Precise, Safe, and Customized Dental Implant Surgery

At Sharp Smile Center, we provide complete dental implant services at our office. Dr. Michael Sharp can even perform advanced dental implant surgery at our Portage, MI, office. He is a highly experienced implantologist who can combine various procedures in a comprehensive treatment plan. He also uses advanced computer planning software to place dental implants with the greatest precision possible. Furthermore, he highly values patient comfort. In addition to using very gentle methods, he provides safe, effective sedation to help you remain calm and comfortable throughout your surgery.

Preparing for Surgery

Before implant surgery, you will have a thorough consultation with Dr. Sharp. At this time, he will determine your need for preparatory procedures, such as bone grafting or a sinus lift. Your consultation will also allow Dr. Sharp to create a unique treatment strategy. He proudly uses advanced planning software to guarantee safe and accurate surgeries. Using images of your jaw, he will determine the locations where your dental implants will have the most support. Often, this technology can eliminate the need for bone grafting.

Finally, at this initial appointment, Dr. Sharp will tell you how to prepare for your surgery. In particular, you should take some time off from work. You should also arrange for a ride to and from your appointment. You may also want to find someone who can stay with you for a day or two to help with routine tasks around the house. Dr. Sharp will provide additional instructions, based on your unique procedure and particular needs.

The Surgical Process Itself

Before dental implant surgery, we will supply gentle, safe sedation. If you choose to receive oral conscious sedation, anti-anxiety drugs can induce a deep “twilight sleep.” Though you will not be fully sedated, you also will not be completely aware of what is going on during your treatment. Thus, you can undergo surgery with minimal discomfort and stress.

After the drugs take effect, Dr. Sharp will create small incisions in your gums. Through these openings, he will carefully create space for your dental implant posts. He can then place the titanium posts in your jawbone, using the computer-guided plan created during your consultation. He may place one or more posts, depending on the number of missing teeth and the size of your restoration. When they are all in place, he will close the incisions with small, dissolvable stitches.

What to Expect after Dental Implant Surgery

You will be able to return home the day of your implant surgery. However, you will need to remain at the office for a while so that we can monitor your initial recovery. A member of our team will also need to change the gauze over the incision sites before you can go home. You should expect to be a bit groggy as sedation wears off.

You may experience some swelling and soreness for a few days after your procedure, but these effects should subside quickly. We can prescribe pain medication to ensure your comfort during recovery. However, after the first day or two, most patients are able to manage any pain with over-the-counter medications. In most cases, patients can return to work within a couple of days. You will continue to heal as your jawbone fuses around the implants posts over the next four to six months, creating a permanent, stable foundation for your restoration.
