At Sharp Smile Center, we don't just make dentures—we strive to make beautiful dentures. They look so real that even from a conversational distance, people won't be able to tell that they aren't your real teeth.
Dr. Sharp especially enjoys providing this service, because it truly helps people in an immediate way. If you've lost all your teeth, you yearn to have something good-looking, comfortable, and functional once again. You want your mouth and smile to feel as whole as you can. |
Making dentures is truly a team effort. Dentists do the work directly with the patients, and most of the success depends on the skill of the dentist. They take the impressions, consult the patient to determine the proper smile design, and supervise all of the rest of the work. But much of the ultimate beauty of the finished product depends on the laboratory technician. Sharp Smile Center uses an excellent laboratory technician who, like Dr. Sharp, has an excellent artistic sense.
Other Options for Dentures
But even the most beautiful and well-made complete denture is nothing like having your own teeth back. They are removable, and there is always the worry that they might come loose at the wrong time. The upper denture has to cover your palate in order to have enough suction to stay in place, and this interferes with your taste and enjoyment of food. And dentures rest on movable tissue, so it's impossible to fix them in place the way your natural teeth were.
The most serious drawback for dentures is that, once your teeth are gone, your body begins to re-absorb the bone. Sensing that this bone is no longer needed, your body takes those minerals to use elsewhere in the body. Therefore, your jawbone begins to shrink. After about twenty years, there can be almost no jawbone left. Your face develops a sunken-in appearance and it becomes difficult to retain a denture at all. Diet may have to be restricted because your chewing ability is so compromised.
For this reason, many people who have lost their teeth are turning to dental implants. These are fixed in your jawbone so that your teeth are stable, and it feels like you really do have your own teeth back. Bone re-absorption is prevented, and you can again eat whatever you want to.
Depending upon the specific needs of your case regarding implants and dentures, overdentures could be an option for you.
